How to upload and extract a ZIP file in cPanel’s File Manager

This tutorial explains step-by-step how to upload a compressed (ZIP) file into the cPanel File Manager and how to extract its contents into the correct folder. This method is very useful for quickly installing a website, moving multiple files at once, or performing backups.

What is a “ZIP file”?

A ZIP file is a compressed file that contains one or more files or folders. It helps reduce the total size and simplify transfers. For example, if your site has a structure with multiple folders, grouping them into a ZIP file lets you upload everything in one go.

Access cPanel and open the File Manager

Before doing anything, you need to log into your cPanel account. Here’s how:

  • Log in to your cPanel account
  • Once in the dashboard, look for the Files section
  • Click on the File Manager tool
  • cPanel File Manager

This will open a new window displaying the file structure of your hosting account.

Upload a ZIP file to the correct folder

Here’s how to upload your ZIP file into cPanel:

  • In the File Manager, navigate to the folder where you want to extract the ZIP file contents.
For example, for a main website, choose the public_html folder.

  • Click the Upload button (top left)

  • A new page will open. Click Select File, then choose your .zip file from your computer

  • Wait for the upload to reach 100%. Once done, you can return to the File Manager

Extract (unzip) the ZIP file in cPanel

Once the ZIP file is uploaded, here’s how to extract its contents:

  • In the File Manager, you should see your .zip file.
  • Click once on it to select it.
  • Then click the Extract button in the top toolbar, or right-click the file and select Extract.

  • A window will open asking you where to extract the files. By default, cPanel will suggest the same folder where the ZIP file is located.
  • Click Extract Files to start the extraction.

  • Once finished, a dialog box will show the extracted files. Click Close.

Clean up if needed

After extraction:

  • Check that all files are present in the folder.
  • If you no longer need the ZIP file, you can delete it to free up space.
