Before you begin
Back up files and the database, and check that the backup can be restored.
You can update WordPress core, plugins and themes from its dashboard. Updates address bugs, compatibility and security issues. Keeping software maintained helps reduce risk, but does not guarantee performance or security.
How to update WordPress core
1. Sign in to WordPress administration.
2. Click Updates.
3. Click Update Now.
How to update WordPress plugins
On the same page, scroll to plugins with available updates. 1. Select the plugins to update, then click Update Plugins.
After processing, WordPress displays the update results. Review any failures.
How to update a WordPress theme
On the same page, select the theme to update and click Update Themes.
Check the result and troubleshoot
Automatic updates reduce maintenance but do not guarantee trouble-free operation. Test important sites on a copy first. After updating, check administration, forms, sign-in and payments where applicable.
