EA-PHP and ALT-PHP are PHP package families that may be available in cPanel. The choice depends on the server, handler and application requirements, not simply the age of the site.
EA-PHP and EasyApache
EA-PHP uses EasyApache 4 and cPanel MultiPHP tools. Administrators install versions and extensions; account users select permitted domain settings. MultiPHP INI Editor changes directives rather than installed extension packages.
ALT-PHP and PHP Selector
CloudLinux provides ALT-PHP. PHP Selector may offer account-level versions, extensions and options. Features and PHP-FPM compatibility depend on the integration and installed packages.
An available old version is not necessarily supported by the PHP project. Extended vendor patches follow a separate policy; check coverage and plan application updates. Review the official supported-version list before choosing.
Choose and change settings
- Record the domain’s current PHP version and handler.
- Check CMS, extension and application requirements.
- Back up and test on a copy where possible.
- Use MultiPHP Manager or PHP Selector according to the provider’s permitted tools.
- Test pages, forms and scheduled tasks afterward.
Use PHP Selector does not require one universal procedure of first selecting an old ALT-PHP version. Integration may change inheritance and PHP-FPM. If the button is unavailable, ask support to check compatibility instead of changing settings blindly.
Evaluate the result
Compare errors and performance on your real site. Neither system is always faster or safer based solely on its name. Older ea-php74 or alt-php80 examples are not current recommendations.
