There is often confusion between an addon domain, a subdomain, and an alias. Below, we will clarify the differences and explain the utility of each, as well as how you can use them.
Table of Contents
Addon Domain
An addon domain is a domain name linked to your hosting account but relates to a website independent of your main site and domain. The two sites have no connection, are separate, and are entirely different. They are treated separately by search engines.
You can add an addon domain on cPanel.
Sub-domain
If you want to add an independent and distinct section to your main domain name without purchasing a new domain name, a subdomain is the best option for you. The section created remains related to the content of the main site.
A subdomain takes the form (www.subdomain.maindomain.com). It could be: blog, support, help, etc.
You can add a subdomain on cPanel yourself, without needing to contact your hosting provider. But first, you need to order a main domain.
Example:
www.support.capconnect.com is a subdomain of www.capconnect.com
Alias
Aliases, also called parked domains, are domains that direct to the same main site but have different extensions. These domains contain exactly the same pages and categories as the main site. In other words, aliases are simply other domain names for the same website.
Example:
capconnect.com
capconnect.ma
