How to get the EPP code for domain name transfer?

EPP code (Extensible Provisioning Protocol code), also known as an Authorization Code or Transfer Code, is a unique key assigned to a domain name. It acts as a security measure to prevent unauthorized domain transfers and is required when moving a domain from one registrar to another.

In this article, we will explain what an EPP code is, why it is important, and how you can obtain it from your domain account. Whether you are planning to transfer your domain or simply want to secure your domain ownership, understanding the EPP code is essential.

What is EPP code

The EPP code is a unique password that protects your domain name (like yourcompany.com). It works like the secret code to a safe that holds your domain.

When you want to move your domain from one hosting provider to another, you need this code to prove you’re really the owner of the domain.

Specifically:

  • It’s typically a combination of letters and numbers (example: Abc123XyZ)
  • You request it from your current hosting provider
  • You provide it to your new hosting provider
  • Without this code, nobody can “steal” or move your domain

It’s essentially a security mechanism that ensures only you, as the legitimate owner, can transfer your domain.

Reasons to Obtain an EPP Code

  1. Domain Transfer – Required to move your domain to another registrar.
  2. Security – Prevents unauthorized transfers and protects your domain.
  3. Hosting Changes – Needed if switching providers that also manage your domain.
  4. Domain Consolidation – Helps manage all domains under one registrar.
  5. Better Pricing & Service – Allows transfer to a registrar with better rates or support.
